It feels like it this year, but that's only because suddenly Wigan and Warrington are both the real deal.

Not since the late 1980s have we had a situation where Wigan and Warrington were both at the top of the table, and good for it.

I still think that, generally speaking, Wigan v Saints is a bigger derby.

Nowhere in there does he claim this to be the biggest derby.

He simply states that because so much depends on the outcome, THIS MATCH (i.e. *Not* every Wigan v Wire match) is bigger than your average Wigan v Saints Derby.

He is comparing it to a derby, not claiming it as one.

This match is bigger. In terms of the bigger derby, wire are nowhere really.

Still the Wigan v Wire derby is now one of the biggest IMO.

Wire v Wigan on the pitch is bigger than Leeds V Bradford, Hull V Hull KR, Cas V Wakefield just for entertainment value alone, but never will it beat the passion and the excitement of Saints V Wigan. It was on the VT that the term 'derby' was first used for a Wigan Vs St Helens match - why we never use this when promoting the games ill never know!

Edit: This is what was posted: "The term 'derby' in sport actually comes from the Wigan-Saints derby as Lord Derby used to arrange the game in victorian times (i think). Why RL and the two clubs don't advertise this I don't know, someone as rich as Lord Derby would be a tremendous asset for RL."

Wire are our third most important derby team. However, this particular game is massive.

If you are thinking Leigh is big then think again. Untill they get back in super league and can compete with us Leigh is merely a bus stop.

As is now posted on the club website in the late 1940s until about 1954 the Wigan / wire match was much bigger than the Saints match. I lived in Golborne and went to school in Newton and the rivalry between wigan and warrington fans was much more intense than with saints fans

Absolutly not. This year its a huge game because of League position, and while I hate Wire at the moment, Saints are our biggest rivals imo.
